How A Careless Mistake Rewards me a New Phone

I felt a bit guilty about this, but then again, it isn’t actually my fault. Not at all :D

What is? Well, I have this colleague, let’s call him Sam. Sam just got a new phone - a Nokia N80. Not exactly the most cutting edge model, but like any other “my friend just got a new phone” situation, we’re bound to ask to play with it. So as I was playing the phone for a while, he suggested that I try the phone for the day (I’m using an Nokia N70). Surprised, I agreed to him. So we backup our phone data on the PC and switched phones.

It all went well, till he goes for lunch. That’s right, he left my phone (with his SIM Card in it) on the hawker stall. Of course, a phone on an empty table won’t last more than three minutes I say. So the moment he got back there, it was gone. None of the hawkers notice (or pretend to not notice) the phone.

Seeing me in a frozen state, he said he’ll get me a replacement unit, and that I should hold on to his phone till mine is replaced. So I went back home with his phone in my custody.

The following day (which is today). He come and told me he already bought a replacement phone for me.

He bought another N80. Surprised (again) I asked him why didn’t he just get me an N70 instead, and he said, “Well, the shop I went, only have AP N80 and Zitron set for N70, which cost about the same. So why not?”

So in the end, his N80 is mine. I miss my candy bar phone though, I’m never really a slide-phone guy. But oh well, can’t really complain now, can I?

What I miss from my N70

  • Symbian s60 v2 support. Loads and loads of nice games/apps/themes/screensavers supports this platform. I couldn’t install them on this N80 because its a Symbian s60 v3 platform
  • Candybar form factor - Yes I want my keypad and screen on the same layer!
  • Slimness - Althought N70 isn’t the slimmest on the market, but it’s not as fat as N80
  • The Sounds. The speaker on the N80 sounds weird. Lot’s of my tones sounded like as if they’re in a tin can
  • Lens Cover. No physical lens cover for the camera on the N80 :(

What I’m starting to like

  • Very good web browser (yes N80 Internet Edition) - with Zoom, and the page looks like as if it’s on your PC
  • 4 times more screen space (352 x 416 as compared to 176 x 208) - hence giving much sharper text and image
  • Faster operation. Everyone knows Symbian platform isn’t exactly speedy. But looks like Nokia has improved on their memory speed. Photos loads much faster here too
  • Macro shooting mode. Finally
  • WiFi - need I say more?
  • USB Mass Storage Device mode - acting like a USB Disk (Pendrive)

What I like the most - It didn’t cost me any dime.

What can i say about this is, :/ Probably the gods already make a plan for you on the day ur using his handphone… lawl. Kinda pity ur friend tho.. Having to buy two n80 handphone on the same month is.. ouch. :/

Fird: He’s completely okay with it though. I did told him don’t rush it because I have an old phone I could use meantime. But he insisted I keep his phone till he replaces mine. So yeah, in the end he didn’t really replace my phone. But got me a new one. Pure luck?

You miss N70’s production of weird sounds?
And the unavailability of physical lens?

Fird: Whoopsie. Edited :p

SWEET!

You gotta love the resolution for games. I find arcade games to be hard to view with fast-scrolling low-res screens.

Funny, that happened to my friend too, who swapped and got a 5510 in place of a 3310.

Fird: Do you know of any games that is made for this device? Most of my favorite games are for either S60, or S60 2nd Ed. Difficult to find S60 3rd Ed games :( Maybe I didn’t look hard enough!
