The Shift from Mad Online RPG to TV Couchness
I’ve been doing this almost thrice in my life so far, but never as drastic as this one.
The first one caught me in a very expensive price - at the cost of my University grade. That was back in 2003, while I am already failing exams over and over (and yeah, reinstated like twice). MMORPG in Malaysia at that point have not yet reached it’s peak. I was playing Priston Tale (now that I look at it, I have no idea why I got hooked at it. It only have ONE quest ever in the game, and it’s all about grinding. You can call it MMOGG a.k.a Massively Multi-player Online Grinding Game). I got hooked on it for almost a year, when it finally dawned on me that the game is absolutely pointless to play anymore.
I didn’t quit. I hopped onto mRO (Malaysia Ragnarok Online). This game really took the toll. It went from leveling every single hour of the day, down to starting to use ‘Toyols’ (an acronym I use to call my slave account to bot for rares and money), and ended up running up to 8 simultaneous accounts. I quit this game when I left Uni in 2005.
I started full time job midway through 2005 (was a direct sales agent for two months. Good experience, loads of skills acquired, but I rather not stay there) as a Cybercafe attendant cum Technician. Then I got hired by one of the leading IT Company, and started to work in KL, until now.
Last May, another MMO launched its Open Beta in this region, called Granado Espada. I played and got hooked to it, albeit this time I successfully impose my own limits to myself. I decided to quit abruptly this month. Why? I think I had enough of MMO’s. I’ll just save up some cash and get myself a console, and start to enjoy pain-free gaming (consoles usually don’t have quirks like installation issues, must have good gfx card, must have 16GB ram, must have 2TB hard disk space. All the games designed for the Console will run on it perfectly).
So now my quest begins - PS3? Xbox 360? Wii?. I want the most common platform, I don’t really care much about what’s the tech specs are. As long as there’s many nice games on it, I’m game!

Jap…jap…
ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *screams*
Ok, now Mr.Ross, how bout some PSP action? Boleh main sama-sama hahahahaha.
Not a bad idea. PSP is rather cheap too. Let’s see :p
nyeh nyeh
yayay yayay
Jump into X360 and together, we shall spread terror across the Xbox Live! >:D
pee ess twee la kalau aku :D
… tak tau nak vote mana satu.. xbox360 kot? but… other consoles are good too @_@
Hmm… this morning they just announced/released a new PS3 with 40gb hard disk and lower power 65nm cell processor.
One thing is that is PS3 in Malaysia mod-able? I don’t think I’m willing to fork out that much for the game titles just yet, plus PS3’s price is kind of not-so-funny.
ATM, looking at possibilities of XBOX360 and old-age PS2, or maybe PSP, but I’ll need to get 2 PSPs if I’m getting that - which will cost the same as XBOX360 x.x
If you want fun go for Wii. Nunchuks for win.
If you want gaming excitement go for 360. Xbox live with amplify the experience.
If you want raw power and versatility, go for PS3. Heaviest specs of all, like an obese geek.
Yeah, from the looks of it. X360 seems favorable at the moment. I’ll continue reading up :D Thanks guys for the tips.
A brand new PS3 - cooler and low power consumption; You lose the heater function (it’s mooted since this is a humid and hot country) but hey, atleast now you could keep yourself occupied by running Folding@home instance 24/7 while waiting for good games to come out without worrying much about the bill. ;)
Rofl, No I don’t plan to run Folding@home :O
Holy crap, you’re quitting GE? Never believe I’d live to see that :P Yeah, RO was funny.. our slaves was excellent except that’s the reason the game died or should I say lost its fun. Sad eh?
Wrong dude. I’m not quitting GE. I quit GE :p
from a person who don’t know what to say but wants to comment as well:

Yo Ross, XBOX360 should be sufficient. If you look at the trends in the game industry, many of the major titles like Ace Combat, Armoured Core, Gran Turismo, and many major companies like Square Enix, Namco, Capcom are making in-roads with exclusive titles for XBOX360. Of course, when you look at the the major titles like Playstation’s flagship “METAL GEAR SOLID” on PS3, its hard.
But if you want to tweak with things, PS3’s good enough. Heck, even LINUX can run on PS2, its just a matter of time before some folks go around distributing LINUX for PS3. Voila. LOL. The ultimate machine.
My choice? XBOX 360 for now, until the major companies make a return to PS3. (Which I’m very sure you can afford both haha)
A friend tipped, XBOX360 = RM1.7K
PlayStation 3 = RM1.2k
=)
You sure PS3 only 1.2k?
Because I’ve done some scouting and almost most of the time PS3 is priced at 1.7 - 1.8k (some even 1.9k), while X360 is around 1.4 - 1.5 area. Maybe I’ll do some more scouting. Looks like there’s a high chance of X360 in my living room atm :p
Ekekeke and a very faithful Mary to play there as well. Erk, the games I mean…
Okay after asking around from console-geek friends, I’ve decided to pick Xbox 360 for the following reasons:
- Good community support (XboX Live Ftw).
- Good amount of game titles.
- Not too expensive to be on the bleeding edge, but not too cheap to be on the extinction too.
But reading the RROD articles made me shiver somewhat. Luckily my friend Harris pointed out to me a reliable shop I can trust on should there’s any issues with the consoles.
*Sigh* modern consoles seems to need some love and care. Unline the SNES where you can just throw one away and get a new one when it’s spoilt :p
Now I miss that good ol’ Mario! Haha :D
yeappers. That’s how it is. eh, you can get a XBOX for RM1.4K?
Holy shyte, i’m converting the 1.2k i’m trying to save up for a brand new PC, for XBOX! Nyahahahaha!
where did you get yours?
*note: PS3 took another blow when another one of my favourite series hopped over to XBOX. Huhuhuhuh…….*
I haven’t got mine yet. Not now at least.
Btw there’s several types of X360, the one I saw was the “Pro” package. I’m thinking of might as well get the Elite X360. Which is around Rm1.7k like your friend said. I like it, it’s black! Fits my HT setup :p
I wish I’m working edi.
And I wish I’m earning bucks in USD.
And then I’d get myself a PS3.
Ahh..
